GM Expands Super Cruise Network to 750,000 Hands-Free Miles, Largest in North America

First, if you set the cruise control too fast, it can occasionally accelerate into turns in a way no human would. Second, when it comes to passing large vehicles like semi trucks, a human driver typically will give them a wide berth. Super Cruise passes them like it would any other vehicle, and unless you like the feeling of “buzzing the tower,” so to speak, it can feel a bit freaky.

GM’s Hands-Free Super Cruise Expands To 750,000 Miles

Super Cruise does not steer to prevent a crash with stopped or slow-moving vehicles. You must supervise the driving task and may need to steer and brake to prevent a crash, especially in stop-and-go traffic or when a vehicle suddenly enters your lane. Comparison of active safety/driver assistance feature availability does not include the relative effectiveness nor functionality of the compared features. Each manufacturer designs and develops features that may or may not perform equivalently due to differences in sensors used, data interpretation, and other vehicle mechanizations. Feature comparisons based on data from competitors’ websites and owner manuals.

I’M ON A COMPATIBLE ROAD ARE THERE ANY OTHER LIMITATIONS ON USING SUPER CRUISE?

If a suitable opening is detected, Super Cruise will automatically initiate the turn signal and change lanes without the driver doing anything other than paying attention to the road. As the road network is expanded, Craig explained that the process starts with DMP doing a road survey in a region, such as southeast Michigan. GM then goes through the new data, classifying different road types and then engineers go out and test the system on those roads to determine which categories are suitable for safe operation. Based on those category selections, DMP then goes and maps similar roads throughout the country. Once everything is validated, updates get pushed to customers. The only Super Cruise equipped vehicles that won’t get updated are those with the first generation version, the Cadillac CT6 and XT6 and the Chevrolet Bolt EUV.

WILL SUPER CRUISE STEER TO AVOID SAFETY SITUATIONS, OBJECTS OR ANY ROAD IMPEDIMENTS?

By doubling the Super Cruise road network, hundreds of thousands of additional miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada can be explored hands-free. Another new feature for model year 2024 is collaborative steering. Previously if a driver took the wheel while Super Cruise was in green state (automatically steering) it would switch the mode to blue and then resume once the vehicle is centered in the lane again.

If there is an obstruction on the road, will Super Cruise steer around it?

High precision LiDAR mapping gives us an operating domain where we are confident in Super Cruise’s abilities.”– Anantha Kancherla, GM vice president of ADAS. Once you are ready for Super Cruise to steer again, center the vehicle in the lane and wait for the steering wheel to turn green. You can remove your hands when the steering wheel is green. If the steering wheel light bar flashes red for too long, a voice prompt will be heard. You should take over steering immediately; otherwise, the vehicle will slow in your lane of travel and eventually brake to a stop, as well as prompt an Emergency-Certified OnStar Advisor to call into the vehicle to check on you.

Inside the cabin is a Driver Attention System consisting of a camera integrated on top of the steering column and infrared emitters integrated into the steering wheel. These components help ensure the driver is paying attention. With 400,000 miles and counting of compatible highways in the U.S. and Canada, there are plenty of regions where attentive drivers can take advantage of Super Cruise. To turn Super Cruise off, press the Super Cruise button again or firmly take control of steering and press your brake pedal.

GM’s Super Cruise Hands-Free Driving Feature Blew My Mind Over 2,000 Miles

Some features shown may have limited, late or no availability. For more about Super Cruise and how it works visit GM.com/safedeployment. •    The brake pedal is being pressed.•    The Adaptive Cruise Control has been canceled or turned off. “Unavailable Set Forward Collision Setting to Alert and Brake”? Super Cruise is disabled unless Alert and Brake is selected.

The result was being more alert and attentive for a longer duration and not suddenly feeling like it was time for rest stops. Instead, it was a case of "Oh, I could use a coffee and a snack," not, "I need a break." Fully autonomous vehicles on the road aren't going to happen for a long, long time. That’s why Super Cruise has been enhanced for the new Sierra Denali and Denali Ultimate to function while trailering. The technology is compatible with trailers up to the allowable weight limits of both trucks (Lane Change on Demand and Automatic Lane Change are not available while trailering). Super Cruise-compatible roadways will appear as part of the route overview on the touchscreen and will be distinguished in a white highlight.

If you fully latched the turn signal to begin Lane Change On Demand, you must unlatch it when the lane change is finished to turn off the turn signal. Super Cruise will then begin searching for an acceptable opening in the lane, while giving other drivers enough time to see your turn signal. You’ll see a message in your Driver Information Center (DIC) letting you know Super Cruise is looking for an opening. O If this occurs, an OnStar Emergency-Certified Advisor† will contact you to ensure that you are safe and are paying attention to the road. Super Cruise can also be turned off by pressing the Adaptive Cruise Control ON/OFF or CANCEL button, or pulling the Regen On Demand paddle toward you on an EV. That’s understandable, but I do want to note a couple of moments where the AI gave me pause.

As our destination was also 869 miles from my New York City apartment, this trip proved the perfect occasion to put GMC’s most tricked-out SUV, the Yukon Denali Ultimate, through its paces. On a road trip deep into Canada with the loaded GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate, one big thing stands out. Multiple cameras and sensors work in tandem to help keep you traveling in your lane.

Do not remove your hands from the steering wheel unless the light bar is green, which indicates that Super Cruise is steering the vehicle. To disengage Super Cruise, press the Super Cruise button again or press the brake pedal. Super Cruise functionality is enabled by a data connection for real-time, precise positioning and periodic Super Cruise map updates. In order to operate Super Cruise, you must have an active and eligible OnStar Super Cruise plan. Super Cruise vehicles are also connected to OnStar Emergency Services†, so Emergency-Certified Onstar Advisors† can assist drivers should they become non-responsive while Super Cruise is active.

Each individual has their own tendency of where they drive in a lane, and where they perceive the center of the lane to be. Because we do not sit in the center of the vehicle, this can vary from driver to driver, and also depends on what type of vehicle is being driven based on how wide or tall the vehicle is. Super Cruise is designed to drive in the true center of the lane (+/- 4 inches or 10 cm). This may be different from where each individual normally drives and may give some drivers the feeling that they are too far to one side.

Proper conditions and an attentive driver are required in order to activate and use Super Cruise. Make sure you’re on a compatible road with clearly visible lane markings and that your camera and radar sensors aren’t covered, and ensure your eyes are on the road so the Driver Attention System detects you’re paying attention. Experience more than 200,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada in Bolt EUV and more than 400,000 miles of compatible roads for other select Super Cruise enabled Chevy vehicles†. For your next trip, use the map below to search for compatible U.S. roads.

But if the road is covered in snow — or it’s a dirt road like the one we encountered on one of our splitboarding jaunts — you’re SOL. Please check your Owner’s Manual for more information about features. Super Cruise requires a working electrical system, cell reception and GPS signal. After the initial Super Cruise trial included with vehicle purchase ends, it also requires an eligible OnStar®† plan (stand-alone Super Cruise plan). Remember, when you’re using Super Cruise, you must pay attention while driving and should not use a hand-held device. Maintains a selected following gap between you and the detected vehicle ahead.

These systems work together through “sensor fusion” to create a sensory field around the vehicle that assists in keeping it centered in the lane while elevating the driver’s comfort and convenience. Unlike Tesla’s AutoPilot, Super Cruise has always been geo-fenced as part of the effort to minimize the possibility it will be misused by drivers. Unlike true fully automated systems like those being developed by Waymo, Cruise and others, Super Cruise, Fords’ Blue Cruise, Nissan’s ProPilot Assist V2 and AutoPilot are meant to be supervised by a human driver.

GM recently announced it was canceling Ultra Cruise without giving much detail, but it’s likely there were significant concerns about safety of operating in cities. Some of the features that were planned for Ultra Cruise such as traffic signal recognition may still make their way into future Super Cruise updates according to chief engineer Jeff Miller. What it will be capable of is handling the driving on a more broadly complex section of road types. For example, some sections of the Pacific Coast Highway are extremely curvy with only the bare minimum of space between opposing lanes of traffic. According to GM, the system’s use of high-definition maps of those roads will enable it to deal with every twist and turn safely and confidently.
